It’s time for another instalment of our new series in which we look at people in print and more importantly, their stories. We believe everyone has a great story to tell and we are providing the platform to share and be heard.

From those just starting their first jobs in print, to others who have now finished their careers, let’s hear from the past, present and future of our industry.

Next up we have…

Andrew Head – New to the industry [2020- to present]

Andrew Head for Print Story

Tell us about your print story?

I am a 21year old student. I needed an income, like most students, and was told about a position at a fulfilment company (Latcam) to work on the print and hand packing side. It was good money and I wanted to learn new skills, so I decided to go for it. Even though I started this job to gain a little bit of money during my holidays at university I can see a future in continuing to work in the print industry.

What is your experience of starting out in the print industry?

It is a knowledgeable and friendly place. Everyone in the factory is very inclusive. They are eager to go through the machines they work on and their unique techniques to get jobs out on time without mistakes. Within the factory there is always the constant sounds of machines going and the smell of the factory is so distinctive with the mix of ink and paper.

As a young person, where do you use print in your daily life?

I use books and physical journals when I am studying as it can be easier to retain information. I also buy magazines when I am out. Lastly, I have been given leaflets for events and loyalty cards etc. that I have used and kept.

Why is print important to you?

It prevents me from always looking at a screen. I sometimes get overwhelmed with the amount of screen time I do for my studies but, also, in my personal life so getting away from that is so refreshing.  It is almost like giving myself a mental break.

What are your predictions for the future of print?

I believe print and digital will work hand in hand in the future. Because, sometimes, print is a more approachable way of delivering information to customers than digital, especially personal information. I believe it will always be a secure method to reach customers and an effective way to promote content.
